We were able to quickly turnaround one of the best grant applications we have ever submitted and in less than a month’s time. FFF helped us stay on timeline and get tasks accomplished. Having their assistance, we were able to stay focused on each task at hand and actually were able to finish ahead of the proposed timeline.

The knowledge-level and support provided by the Foundation for Families team was exceptional. Our Expansion application was successful, resulting in an additional 104 children in Douglas County being served. Additionally, I feel like we strengthened our own knowledge of HSPPS and Head Start values throughout both processes, which will have a lasting impact on all of the work we do. The FFF team has great knowledge and expertise, is highly organized, and communicates effectively. As a result, our products were of a much higher caliber than they would have been otherwise.

Waiting for a DRS NOFO? How to Use Your Time

Each year, around this time, Head Start programs in DRS are beginning to prepare for their grant competition. Typically, there is a forecast on Grants.gov that alerts agencies to when the Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) for their grant will open and when applications will be due. As we head into the start of a new program year, there is not yet a forecast posted on Grants.gov for fall DRS grant competitions. While there is usually a forecast a month or more out, the lead time can be much shorter. We understand that this creates some uncertainty for program.

How to Leverage Efficiencies in DRS Planning

While there is uncertainty about the future of Head Start, children and families are being served and the core aspects of the federal program continue on – including DRS. We understand that having a program in DRS can be unsettling. With the right planning and tools, the process can go smoothly and successfully. Here, we talk about what to expect for the next round of DRS and how you can leverage efficiencies in planning.

Now that the NOFO has officially posted, it appears the grant competitions will move forward.

This week, federal grant recipients, including Head Start grantees, experienced uncertainty about their immediate funding and future of their grants. While it’s unclear when currently forecasted grant opportunities will move forward, we encourage programs awaiting a DRS competition to use this time to prepare.

Balancing Data in Your Head Start Community Assessment Annual Review

When the Head Start Program Performance Standards were revised last year, there were changes to community assessment requirements about when a full update to the report is necessary. Programs must complete a comprehensive community assessment once during the five-year grant period, and an update is only required if significant changes are identified during an annual review. How can a program determine if there are significant changes, particularly if only a few data points must be examined in the annual review? Here, we explore this question and provide strategies for how to leverage the annual review as a meaningful planning tool.

Here are a few ways you can prepare.

Six Tips for Responding to Federal Priorities in Head Start

Last month, we presented a webinar, Responding to Federal Priorities, to provide practical ways to operationalize federal guidance and identify strategies to think proactively about program activities. The webinar focused on the primary priorities as identified in Secretary Kennedy’s May testimony about the President’s HHS FY 2026 Budget, as well as two recent IMs – ACF-OHS-IM-25-03 Promoting Healthy Eating and Nutrition for Head Start Children and Families (March 2025) and ACF-OHS-IM-25-04 Expanding Educational Freedom and Opportunities for Families in Head Start Programs (April 2025). Those priorities included increasing parental choice; improving health, education, and employment outcomes; increasing program delivery efficiency; and promoting parental engagement.
